German Media and Newspapers

TV-News shows:

www.tagesschau.de
(The "Tagesschau" has been Germany's number one news show for many years now. Broadcasted by the ARD TV-station, this link comprises each of the political issues, both domestic and foreign, which were aired during the actual show at 8:15pm. (The video option to be found on that link will start the taped version of the news show.)

www.heute.de
(The ZDF TV-station news show "heute" follows the ARD version in many ways, although this show adds more glamorous as well as spectacular aspects to the presentation of news. One special section of that show is called "leute heute", an entertainment part of the show hosted by Nina Ruge. Her famous last words at the end of each show are rather corny: "Alles wird gut.")

www.n-tv.de
(N-TV is an independent German news station role-modelled after American/International news channels. Around the clock presentation of news is combined with economic reports, stock market reviews, or weather information. N-TV also broadcasts many political events life. This link is very informative and covers many aspects which the other news shows do not focus on.

Newspapers and Magazines:

www.diezeit.de
This is the link that accompanies one of Germany's most acknowledged newspapers. Such famous editors as ex-chancellor Helmuth Schmidt were executive chair editors of this paper. The current chair, Wolf Biermann, is a well-known public figure with an interesting past. Biermann was compelled to leave East Germany in 1976 after having become a member of the resistance to the country's communist government. Anyway, Die Zeit (as well as this link) present many political, cultural, economic issues with highly introspective articles and reviews.

www.frankfurterallgemeine.de
One of Germany's leading newspapers, both critically as well as informatively. Used by numerous intellectuals (i.e. Habermas) to contribute articles or book reviews.

www.sueddeutsche.de
Like the Frankfurter Allgemeine, The Suddeutsche Zeitung belongs to the pantheon of Germany's leading argumentative papers. With a larger section on art and debates on art, this paper enlarges the public discourse on current exhibitions or presentations. The Suddeutsche also offers a local news section.

www.spiegel.de
Germany's leading political and cultural magazine for many decades. Accompanied by a news show, Spiegel-TV, this link introduces the major issues, interviews, reports which the current edition features. Although the actual magazine is more worthwhile the read, this link makes the regular reader anticipate the actual quality of the magazine. Both well-organised and easy to follow links allow quick research or online-discussion. Very recommendable!

www.focus.de
Although once comprised as a counter-magazine to Der Spiegel, this magazine (and its link) has adopted a more entertaining style rather then critical magazine. The majority of readers of this magazine are indeed students.

www.bunte.de
Germany's celebrity would not be well presented without this magazine. Die Bunte has helped many of them to rise and fall. Easy and colourful entertainment, shallow social predictions, but well-shot photos of the rich and beautiful provide reading pleasure to many buyers once a week. This link is not as conclusive about the entire magazine than it should be. It only offers a limited look at the current issue.

TV-Late Night Shows:

www.schmidt.de
Harald Schmidt has become the pioneer of Late Night entertainment in Germany. Obviously, the American role-model has helped to provide ideas, concepts, and other formulas to turn this show (on the air for 5 years now) into an acceptable success. Although Schmidt started out as "Dirty Harry" with provocative and often oddly conceived puns and jokes (he endeavoured to use American humour), he has turned into somewhat of an intellectual joker, wittier than ever before (Schmidt is quite intelligent and makes many a politician pale when interviewed by him).
