Language Learning Links

*Asagaku.com

  • The Children's edition of Asahi Newspaper. A great way to practice reading kanji in a much simpler context and at an easier vocabulary level.

Jim Breen's Japanese Website

  • An immense on-line educational initiative started by computer programmer Jim Breen. Breen-san's site includes dictionaries, translation programs, links, tips on configuring your computer for Japanese, and much more. Includes Access-J, which allows non-Japanese configured computers to access Japanese websites (by converting all Japanese text to image files).

Mangajin

  • Although Mangajin is no longer being published, back issues are still available at the company website. A great resource for learning Japanese.

*Rikai

  • An absolutely amazing site. This site is great for language practice: mousing over words in English articles will provide Japanese translations and mousing over words in Japanese articles will provide English translations. Capable of administering Kanji and vocabulary drills. This site must be seen to be believed!

Google

  • Although not technically a Japanese search engine, Google is nonetheless capable of handling and performing searches in Japanese. Simply click the [preferences] link on the Google page and set Japanese as the interface language. Of course, you will need to have Japanese input capabilities on your computer to use this function.

*Lycos Japan

  • The Japanese version of Lycos. Must have Japanese input capabilities to use.

*Yahoo! Japan

  • The Japanese version of Yahoo! Must have Japanese input capabilities to use.

*Asahi Shimbun

  • Daily news from one of Japan's largest newspapers.

*E-Tenki Net

  • Get the latest weather update from across Japan here.

*Hokkaido Shinbun

  • News from Japan's "North Country."

Japan Times Weekly

  • An Internet version of Japan's largest English-language newspaper.

*Mainichi Shinbun

  • An on-line version of another of Japan's largest daily newspapers.

*Mainichi Broadcasting System

  • Mainichi Broadcasting System's website. Has information on all of their media, including live and pre-recorded links to radio programs in Japan.

*Nikkei Net

  • Nikkei Net, the on-line version of Nihon Keizai Shinbun, a financial newspaper in Japan.

*Yomiuri On-Line

  • The on-line edition of the third of the three biggest newspapers in Japan (Asahi, Mainichi and Yomiuri).

  • A newspaper-type site with information on current happenings in Japan.

Japanese Text Initiative

  • The folks at this site are attempting to put great works of Japanese literature online in Japanese, Japanese romanization, and in English translation.

Lunar Calendar in Japan

  • An interesting site that explains the Chinese Lunar Calendar system.

Origami Homepage

  • Information about the art of origami, including photos of examples.

Gaijin Pot

  • An odd name, but a nice resource. An extensive listing of job opportunities in Japan for foreign workers.

The Japanese Consulate in Denver

  • Information on the Japanese Consulate in Denver. If you plan on going to Japan, this is where you will apply for your visa.

O-Hayo Sensei

  • A newsletter of (primarily teaching) jobs available in Japan for native speakers of English.

Pre-Modern Japanese Studies

  • The web site of the PMJS Journal, with articles and links to topics in art, culture, history, politics, philosophy and religion.

Shushou Kantei

  • The official website for the residence (kantei) of the Japanese Prime Minister. Includes virtual tours of the kantei, as well as current news and information on the Prime Minister. In Japanese and English.
