Foreign Language Technology Program
General Information

The Foreign Language Technology Program is a non-degree program offering training in the theories and practices of instructional technologies. The workshops are open to all CU-Boulder graduate students, faculty, and instructors of the foreign languages. ALTEC offers an average of eight workshops per semester and an annual portfolio intensive.

The curriculum of the FLTP places an equal emphasis on the acquisition of instructional design principles and the development of technical skills. The language technology integration workshops address areas of foreign language instruction including literature and culture, and offer training in the most relevant technologies and design principles. Upon completion of the required workshops, students develop an online portfolio with assistance from the ALTEC team.

The workshops usually take place in the ALTEC PC classroom (Hellems 152). In order to accommodate the busy schedules of the graduate students and instructors, each workshop is offered in two different timeslots within the same week. Participants may either sign up online or call ALTEC (2-8224). Each workshop is capped at 10 participants to maximize personal attention and quality of instruction. Sign up early!

ALTEC provides the FLTP participants with a number of opportunities to put their newly acquired skills into practice:

  • The workshops are hands-on and project-based.
  • Participants receive an illustrated manual recounting all the activities they completed during the session.*
  • Most hands-on workshops have their own webpages, which provide the table of contents of the session, tutorials, and fully developed instructional projects.
  • FLTP participants are invited to schedule optional hands-on practice sessions with the assistance of the ALTEC team.
  • ALTEC has two individual development stations, rooms 152a and 152b, equipped with computers, scanners, internet access, firewires, and headsets. 152c is a sound recording studio, devoted to recording processes for video, audio, and website design. State-of-the-art equipment and software including ProTools and Garage Band make exciting instructional development projects possible. Participants are welcome to reserve any of these rooms to work on projects of their own. They can be reserved through the ALTEC Program Coordinator by calling 2-8224.
Connections with the Graduate Teacher Program

Up to three FLTP workshops may be counted toward completion of the Graduate Teacher Program requirements. If you are considering the FLTP, take a few of our workshops to help you decide, and rest assured the first few may count toward either program. A workshop may not be double-counted toward completion of both programs.

  • A workshop can only be waived providing that the student can demonstrate adequate proficiency in the material.
  • Keep in mind that the FLTP is a non-degree program overseen by ALTEC and by the graduate school. FLTP certification is awarded only to those students who complete program requirements. ALTEC will waive a maximum of three workshops.
  • If you are already proficient in instructional technologies, the FLTP may not be the best option for you; instead, we encourage you to start your portfolio right away. Our Foreign Language Technology Program Coordinator, Edwige Simon, is available to help you with this task.

* You must attend the workshop in order to receive the manual. The learner manuals are the property of ALTEC and are copyrighted.
