Dec. 13 is the longest night of the year, and to stave off the darkness, Swedes in the late sixteenth century came up with a joyful solution to the cold, dark season – a Queen of Light tradition. Wearing a white gown and a crown of candles on her head, Lucia and her attendant girls and boys sing songs in the darkness, and then serve gingerbread and coffee or glögg to their guests.
