The ALTEC Hive, previously known as the Multimedia Library (Hellems 159), is a language education resource center for the University of Colorado Boulder. It contains a large collection of foreign language films, textbooks, magazines, CDs, books, and other language learning materials from around the world. The space was designed with the language student in mind. We thus supply the latest technology that one might need to excel in one's target language. This includes seven PC and seven Mac desktop computers as well as electronics available for loan such as laptops, laptop adaptors, video cameras, microphones, and iPads.
In addition to being a resource center, the Hive is a social hub for CU Boulder's language learning and teaching community. We envision this to be a space that encourages collaboration across disciplines and fosters inclusivity and diversity. Please use this space for your own language-related gatherings and other events. We warmly welcome suggestions on how we might make it more inviting, accessible, and better suit your needs.
Our highly trained student staff--native speakers and students of a wide range of languages--are ready to assist you. Please stop by the front desk to say hello and see if they speak your target language.
Fall, spring, and summer hours: Monday to Thursday, 8:30am-6:00pm; Fridays, 8:30am-4:00pm
Life Language Lounge & Library is closed on national holidays and campus breaks.
Within the Hive we have a set of long tables, and a divided space (The Cube) that can be reserved; each area can seat ten individuals. All of our furniture is moveable and we welcome people of all abilities (those requiring wheelchair access can enter on the west side of the building). When you are ready to make a reservation, please view the schedules and stop by the front desk, or email firstname.lastname@example.org. These spaces can be used for group meetings, playing games, office hours, project planning sessions, study groups, tutoring, and language events such as coffee and conversation meetups.
Language department faculty are encouraged to submit purchase requests for new language learning resources for the Hive's growing collection. To submit a request, please fill out an online Course Material Purchase Request Form. Faculty can also submit an online Media Streaming Request Form in order to stream media online with or without subtitles and allow students to view the media at home.
